5 Beloved Jungle Book Characters That Will Rekindle Your Love For The Wild

5 Beloved Jungle Book Characters That Will Rekindle Your Love For The Wild

If you’re an 80’s or 90’s kid, chances are that you’ve fallen in love with Disney’s The Jungle Book. Based on the brilliant literary works of Rudyard Kipling, Disney provided us all with a fun-filled extravaganza packed with catchy tunes, hilarious one-liners and beautiful hand-drawn animation that was groundbreaking for its time

Fortunately for us old fogeys, some of the studio execs at Disney must have had a collective stroke of genius and green-lit a live-action remake of the movie. So it looks like the magic will be carried over to the newer generation of young ‘uns.

The adventure of the Man-Cub Mowgli and his furry compadres of the jungle was no doubt a masterpiece, and we expect the same with the 2016 live-action release. But what really made the movie shine however, were the colourful characters that still hold a special place in our hearts till this day.

Watching The Jungle Book made you hope for a chance to get lost in the jungle. And while that may have been a childhood dream at one point of time, it shall not remain so for much longer. We have come up with the best locations for all you wildlife lovers to get up close and personal with your favourite Jungle Book characters.

So go shake your tail feather with Baloo, or prowl the jungles with Bagheera, and if you’re feeling adventurous, tread paths with the deadly Shere Khan.

    The Sloth Bear

“Baloo: [singing] Forget about your worries and your strife…

    Mowgli: What’s that?

Baloo: That’s a song about the good life”
    – Disney’s The Jungle Book (2016)

Oh Baloo, you magnificent ball of fur. The carefree fun big brother we always looked up to while growing up. The life-lessons imparted by the Sloth Bear, who also happened to be one of Mowgli’s mentors, helped the Man-Cub embrace the joys of being in the wild, and saved him on more than one occasion from the villainous clutches of the tiger Shere Khan.

    The lack Panther
    The Black Panther

“Bagheera: You wouldn’t marry a panther, would you?
Baloo: I don’t know. Come to think of it, no panther ever asked me”

    – Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967)

The embodiment of snarkiness, the stern demeanour of the black panther Bagheera was a fitting foil to the juvenile antics of Baloo. The voice of reason, Bagheera’s level-headedness was instrumental in the upbringing of Mowgli, and crucial in educating the boy about the Laws of the Jungle.

The panther also took upon himself, the task of returning the boy back to civilization so he could be with his own kind. Apart from being wise and intelligent, he is one seriously cool cat. Would you enter into a face-off with a Bengal tiger? Didn’t think so.

“Bagheera: The Man-Cub is with me. I’m taking him to the man village.

    Colonel Hathi: To stay?

Bagheera: You have the word of Bagheera.

Colonel Hathi: Good. And remember, an elephant never forgets!”

    –Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967)

Savdhaan ! The pompous pachyderm that is the distinguished Col. Hathi won over many hearts with his boisterous attitude and lofty claims about his days at war. But make no mistake, the guy’s a real softy at heart, especially for the little elephant calf Hathi Junior. Also, he’s terrified of his wife Winifred. Guys, we can all relate.

    4.Akela and the Wolf Pack

“Akela: The Council has reached its decision. The Man-cub can no longer stay with the pack. He must leave at once.

    Father Wolf: Leave?

Akela: I am sorry, Rama; there is no other way.”

    -Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967)

The Alpha Male of the wolf pack that raised Mowgli as their own, Akela has all the characteristics that you would find in a leader: calm, collected and ruthlessly rational. In contrast, the parental nurturing of Rama and Raksha, Mowgli’s adoptive parents were the familiar bonds he needed to feel like he belonged. Also, being raised by wolves is just about the coolest thing ever!

    5.Shere Khan

    The Tiger

“Akela: Mowgli is a member of our pack!

Shere Khan: Mowgli? They’ve given it a name! When was it we come to adopt man to this jungle?

    Akela: He’s just a cub.

Shere Khan: Does my face not remind you of what grown man can do?”

    – Disney’s The Jungle Book (2016)

The megalomaniacal villain of the movie, Shere Khan is as awesome as he is terrifying, inspiring fear wherever he treads. The mere news of his return was enough to convince the wolf pack to send Mowgli back to mankind. Ruthless, cunning and downright evil, his relentless pursuit of Mowgli was the reason many of us were wary about getting too close to the tigers at the zoo.
